Get Help

Support is available to anyone who has experienced sex or gender based violence or misconduct, regardless of whether the experience was recent or a long time ago. It’s never too late to get help.

Emily Carr University offers trauma-informed, non-judgmental and confidential support. We have also compiled resources in the broader communities of Vancouver that may be helpful to you.

24/7 Support + Urgent Care

If you are in need of immediate assistance, call SALAL 24-hour crisis and information line: 604-255-6344. Support is available to everyone, including visitors to Canada and international students.

To reach the Vancouver Police Department (VPD): call 911 for emergencies. You can also call their non-emergency line for less urgent issues at 604-717-3321.

If you decide to go to the hospital, you do not have to go alone. You can request hospital accompaniment from WAVAW or you can ask someone you trust to go with you.

What to Expect When Seeking Medical Care:

When you arrive at the hospital, you can inform the intake nurse that you have been assaulted and ask to see a specialized nurse or doctor. Once they arrive, they will explain your medical options.

You have the right to choose what services you receive. You may say no to any tests, exams, or questions that you are uncomfortable with. You have the right to change your mind at any time and ask the doctor or nurse to stop what they are doing if you are uncomfortable.

With your consent, the specialized nurse and/or doctor can provide a thorough examination. They will:

  • Treat your injuries
  • Offer emergency contraception
  • Offer medications to prevent sexually transmitted infections
  • Collect forensic evidence by taking blood and urine samples, swabbing various parts of your body, and photographing your injuries and clothing. This can be done even if you do not wish to contact the police. It gives you the option of reporting if and when you are ready to do so. You can request the hospital to store your evidence for up to one year.
  • Refer you to a hospital counsellor or social worker who will provide follow-up information and refer you to community resources.
